Shana of Mannerly Mutts Training Journal for 3/12/2019

On Tuesday, 3/12/2019, we worked on the following:

FYI, I put my things I work on in my Google Calendar so I don't forget day to day. I don't have enough time to log into my website journal as I go along:)

(Behavioral, fun, and quickness of performance) In dog room, we did 15 minutes of trick training and light obedience work with (not a regular) Sally, (2nd week Pack learning) Hank, (Daycare) Cujo & Bandit & Reggie, and finally (our dog) Boris. Video to be attached later.
30 minute place with muzzle and electronic collar on, while I worked Hank in the dog room. Very good, no breaking in place.

Observations:

Very good attitude while working the tricks. A little more nervous while doing her place, but she stuck it and did it. Just noticed that sometimes she was not as completely calm as I would like. Solution: Keep getting her used to this in behavioral exercises and outdoor adventures.
Got a little nervous playing with Reggie (non training) in dog room while unknown dogs were around. She wanted to play and then snarked a little when Reggie reciprocated after a few minutes. Solution: bring Shana out of the environment when playing with her buddies for awhile.
Trick training, she was very confident and into it. Work: Next step would probably be to start putting the things she is very good at in hand signals, in case I want to do freestyle dance with her in the future (or just know how to do it for future work).
Light obedience work, my flaws in training position and precision showing through. Solutions: Watch where you are rewarding her to correct position. Also review Mike Ellis DVD on focused heeling.
Sit out of motion, fix the fact that I have been doing bad foot work during this. Solution: Need to go back to the beginning.

Puppy Training and a Structured Play Exercise

Structured play with puppies provides many benefits:

Your puppy practices playing with you and object while having limited opportunities to mouth or jump on you (if done correctly).
A fun way to extend training time if wanted.
Create engagement and interest in the owner or person who is included in and a part of the game.

Team Shana goals (of which I am a member):

(Behavioral) Increased confidence and calmness in strange places, crowds, and around little known or strange dogs. End goal for this year, to be able to walk with a much more comfortable dog on a crowded beach in the summer (at least on leash and on muzzle).
(Obedience) Polishing up position and time performed. Also always, increasing distractions where she can work reliably on leash at least. End goal is increasing my skills at being able to consistently and concisely teach and communicate what I want to my dog AND recognize when I am working at odds with myself.
(Behavioral and fun) Continue to increase Shana's repertoire and ability to perform tricks in multiple areas and environments. New tricks started are weave, fetch metal items, and touch things like light switches (hope not to regret this one lol).
(Behavioral and fun) Trick training certificates for us.
(Obedience and behavioral done) Very long term and not necessary goal is to be able to compete in obedience competition, however we are always working these as if we will be able to get the behavioral component to do this as it needs to be.
(Obedience and LT Potential Goal) Retrain stand and sit for new AKC standards and also look into changes for stay.
(Obedience) Need to work on the quiet command. I have not actually been keeping up on this with Shana the last few years or so.
(Obedience and Behavior regarding Impulse Control) Work on advancing out and leave it command in training and everyday life. Especially in games where her drive is high.
